About the Region

The Athabasca Region is situated about half-way between Edmonton and Fort McMurray.

It’s main landscape is the Mixed-Wood Boreal Forest, with agricultural and acreages mixed throughout. The region is intersected by the Athabasca River, who’s headwaters are in Jasper and is one of the only free flowing major rivers in the province.

The Region has a historical importance in the settlement of Northern Alberta, with Athabasca serving as a trade settlement at the turn of the 20th century.

Athabasca is the main town, with the Village of Boyle and multiple hamlets and summer villages serving additional residents.

The main industries are forestry, agriculture, oil & gas and education.

Weather

The weather is created by a humid continental climate that borders on the subarctic.

Summers are variable, with some high-heat days and good moisture. The moist warm weather is great for mosquitos, so be sure to bring repellant when recreating outdoors!

Winters are variable as well, but expect average temperatures to be -10 C or more. When recreating outdoors in the winter, always plan accordingly with appropriate gear, emergency equipment and common sense.
